What Just Happened

OpenAI just made one of the most consequential business moves in its history. Today the company began testing ads inside ChatGPT for the first time. The product that 900 million people use every week, the one that has been famously ad-free since the day it launched, just opened up its core experience to advertisers. The change comes alongside a separate announcement from earlier this week introducing new ways to buy ChatGPT ads. Two announcements in three days. OpenAI is moving fast to build out an entire advertising business inside ChatGPT and they are doing it right before their planned IPO. The free era of ChatGPT is not ending. But the pure era of ChatGPT is. From today forward, the responses you get inside ChatGPT may include sponsored content. The world's most popular AI assistant just became an ad platform.

For Advertisers: You Can Run Ads Within ChatGPT

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
🌎 What OpenAI Is Actually Rolling Out

Here is what changed today and why every detail matters.

The ad test is officially live. OpenAI's blog post from today titled "Testing ads in ChatGPT" confirms the company is now running advertising experiments inside the core ChatGPT product. This is a controlled rollout, not a global flip of the switch. But the precedent is set. OpenAI is no longer a pure subscription business. It is now a hybrid subscription and ad business.

The advertiser onboarding is already built. On May 5 OpenAI published "New ways to buy ChatGPT ads." That post laid out the tooling for advertisers to actually purchase placements inside ChatGPT responses. The whole stack rolled out together. Ad placements live for users on May 7. Ad buying tooling live for advertisers on May 5. This is not exploratory. This is a launch.

Adoption is the real number. ChatGPT has 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers. Codex hits 4 million weekly developers. APIs process 15 billion tokens per minute. If even a small percentage of those user interactions show ads, OpenAI is sitting on one of the largest new ad inventories in tech overnight. For context, that scale puts ChatGPT's potential ad business in the same category as Snap or X within the first year if it takes off.

The pricing of standard ChatGPT is unchanged. Free users still get ChatGPT for free. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers still get their existing subscriptions. The ads test is layered on top of the existing economics, which means OpenAI is essentially adding a new revenue stream rather than replacing the old one. Subscribers are not getting a discount. Free users are subsidizing ad inventory. Advertisers are paying OpenAI for placement.

The IPO context makes the timing obvious. OpenAI is reportedly targeting an IPO this year. Wall Street loves two things in IPO candidates. Recurring revenue and ad revenue. ChatGPT already had recurring subscription revenue. Now it has ads too. The pitch to public market investors just got significantly stronger. A pure subscription business at $50B annualized revenue is one story. A subscription plus ad business at the same revenue with the ad component growing fast is a much bigger story.

🧠 Why This Matters More Than A Product Update

Because this is the moment ChatGPT stopped being a pure tool and became a platform.

For three years ChatGPT had a simple deal with users. You ask, it answers. No ads. No sponsored content. No commercial influence over what the model said. That trust dynamic is part of what made ChatGPT work. People trusted the answers because nobody was paying for placement inside them.

Today that trust dynamic enters a new phase. OpenAI is not running banner ads alongside ChatGPT responses. They are not selling email blasts. They are testing ads inside the actual ChatGPT experience. The exact mechanics will be tested over the coming weeks, but every version of this raises the same fundamental question. Will the answer you get from ChatGPT be influenced by who paid?

OpenAI has been clear in past interviews that they will keep ad placements separate from organic responses. The implementation should preserve the integrity of the core answer. That is the company line and probably their genuine intent. But every ad-supported platform in tech history has started with that same promise. Search results were going to stay pristine. Social media feeds were going to remain organic. News feeds were going to be neutral. In every case the gravitational pull of ad revenue eventually shaped the experience. ChatGPT is going to have to fight that gravity now.

The strategic logic is obvious. OpenAI cannot stay pure-subscription forever. Their cost base is enormous. Compute is getting more expensive, not less. The IPO is coming. The board needs every revenue lever available. Ads were always going to be the next chapter. The question was never whether but when. Today the answer became clear. Now.

Also Today: Code w/ Claude Drops Real Numbers 📊

While OpenAI was opening up to advertisers, Anthropic dropped real metrics yesterday at the Code w/ Claude 2026 event in San Francisco. The numbers are worth knowing.

API volume on the Anthropic platform is up 17x year-over-year. Not 17 percent. Seventeen times. That is the kind of growth that explains why Anthropic just lined up $65 billion in compute commitments from Amazon, Google, and SpaceX in the last five business days.

80x YoY - That is absolutely insane at this scale

Anthropic also announced they are doubling Claude Code five-hour rate limits for Pro, Max, and Enterprise customers starting yesterday. The compute relief from the SpaceX deal is hitting users immediately. Pro and Max subscribers are seeing peak-hour usage caps removed.

The real headline from the event was buried in a customer slide. Shopify and Mercado Libre, the latter with 23,000 engineers, are publicly targeting 90 percent autonomous AI coding by Q3 2026. That is four months away. If they hit it, those companies will essentially run their engineering output through Claude with humans operating as reviewers and architects rather than primary code authors. The post-human dev team is no longer a 2030 prediction. It is a Q3 2026 plan.

What This Means For You

If you use ChatGPT, you are about to see ads. Not today, not necessarily this week, but soon. Free users will likely see them first. Pro and Plus subscribers may see fewer or different formats. The exact placement design has not been disclosed but OpenAI says they are aiming to keep ads visually separate from organic responses.

If you build with the OpenAI API, this likely does not affect your usage directly. The API and ChatGPT product are different surfaces. API responses are not ad-supported. But the broader signal matters. OpenAI is now optimizing for two business models at once which historically affects product decisions.

If you advertise online, this is a new channel about to open up at massive scale. ChatGPT's 900 million weekly users represent one of the largest new ad inventories in tech. Early advertisers will get the cheapest cost per impression. The companies that figure out how to advertise effectively inside conversational AI will have a meaningful advantage over the next two years.

If you watch the AI race, the bigger pattern matters. OpenAI is monetizing aggressively. Anthropic is winning enterprise contracts. Google is integrating AI into search and ads. Meta is buying its way back in. Every major AI lab now has a clear business model built around their model. The era when AI labs were research projects funded by venture capital is over. They are now operating businesses with real revenue streams competing for real customers.
